Errors Costly for Softball in First Loss of Season
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- UNC Pembroke took advantage of several early Catawba errors and topped the seventh-ranked Catawba Indians 6-2 in softball action at the Mid-South Classic on Friday night at Tyger River Park. The Braves improve to 6-5-1, while Catawba ends its unbeaten run in dropping to 10-1.
Two first-inning errors led to a 2-0 Brave lead and UNC Pembroke used another error in the third to make it 3-0. A two-out RBI by Taylor Gerhart pushed the lead to 4-0 after five frames.
Catawba finally got on the board in the sixth. Holli Chandler led off with a single and came around to score on a single by Carley Tysinger. Catawba had runners on the corners with one out after Tysinger's hit, but Abbey Walters was able to get out of the inning without further damage.
UNC Pembroke tacked on two more runs in the sixth on Jamie Johnson's two-out, two-run single. Walters improved to 1-0 with the win. She allowed only four hits and walked four without striking out a batter. Johnson and Whitney Jackson each had two hits.
Delane Smith singled home a run for Catawba in the seventh. Gina Gerone had the other hit. Preston Ellenberg took the loss and fell to 2-1. She surrendered six runs off seven hits and posted six strikeouts.
