Indians Fall to SAC Foe Anderson
SALISBURY, N.C. -- The Catawba College men's and women's tennis team fell to Anderson University in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon at the Johnson Tennis Center. The loss drops the Catawba men to 5-7 on the year while the women stand at 9-4. Both teams are 0-2 in the conference. Anderson's men improve to 5-1 overall with the women advancing to 6-1. Both Anderson Trojans teams are now 2-0 in the SAC.
The Catawba Indians' men dropped the first two doubles matches of the day before picking up a point at the #3 position. The duo of Lucas Miller and Iago Montero Nunez managed to battle out an 8-6 victory.
In men's singles, Anderson took the first two matches before Michael Patch kept the Indians alive with a win at the third seed with scores of 6-4 and 6-3. Catawba's Lucca Picca brought the match to 4-3 with a third set victory at the #4 spot. Picca lost the first set 6-7 before rallying to win 6-4 and 10-6. The Trojans responded to close out the game with wins at the #5 and #6 positions.
The Catawba Lady Indians mirror the men in doubles play after dropping the first two matches before claiming a win at the third flight. Maddie Henderson and Rachel Rudisill won 8-3 for Catawba.
Anderson controlled singles play, but not without some resistance. Catawba freshman, Erisa Onchi, force a third set before recording her first loss of the season. Onchi entered the day with a 10-0 singles record but fell 3-6, 6-4, 0-6. Rudisill also went to a third set with a similar score of 4-6, 6-3, 0-6.
Catawba will hope to get their first conference win of the year as both teams travel to Wingate on Monday. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
