DUNCAN, SC -- The Catawba College softball team earned split decisions on Saturday as they defeated Bellarmine 6-0 then lost to Augusta 2-1 as part of the second day of the Mid-South Classic at Tyger River Park.Catawba moves to 11-2 on the year while Bellarmine falls to 9-9 and Augusta advances to 7-13.

In the opening game with Bellarmine, Catawba scored in the first after Gina Gerone singled to right to bring in Caroline Turner from second. Gerone came through again in the fifth with a bases loaded single to drive in a pair of runs. Later in the sixth inning, Delane Smith lead off the innings with a double before Holli Chandler drove her in with a single to right. Shortly after, a Bellarmine error resulted in two runs for Catawba to secure the 6-0 victory.

Catawba turned to ace Carley Tysinger on the mound who threw five innings before sharing the shutout with Turner. Tysinger finished the game with ten strikeouts and was just one walk away from leaving with a perfect game intact. Turner pitched just as strong with four strikeouts in her two innings of relief and giving up one walk and zero hits.

Bellarmine's Madeline Kurtz took the loss after a four and a third inning appearance. The starter gave up five hits, three runs, and a walk while striking out two. Marlee Tevis finished the game and gave up three hits and just as many runs.

Turner, Gerone, Smith and Chandler equally shared all eight hits for Catawba in the game with Gerone leading the charge with three RBIs.

Against Augusta, Catawba's bats began to cool off as they were held to just two hits all game. Augusta was the first to score in the fifth when a double from Brianna Dickens scored a run from first. Augusta would add a run in the sixth after Lindsey Stokes singled to left center to bring in a run from second. In both cases the runner on base reached as a result of a walk.

Catawba tried to mount a comback in the bottom of the seventh after Turner doubled to open the innning. Tysinger then singled to bring Turner around the bases. Augusta shutdown Catawba for the final two outs to leave Tysinger stranded at first.
Turner's double in the seventh ended a perfect game for Augusta's Paige Deschaine. The ace struckout ten batters on the way to the win.

Turner was credited with the loss in the game after five innings of work. Despite recording four more strikeouts, Turner gave up one run on two hits while adding a pair of walks. Preston Ellenberg took over pitching duties in the sixth where she gave up a hit and run while walking two. Ellenberg lasted through the first out of the seventh before Tysinger returned to the mound to strike out the final two batters.

Catawba will return to Tyger River Park on Sunday for two more games of the Mid-South Classic. The Lady Indians will face St. Joseph's (IN) at 10:00 a.m. before closing the day with defending National Champion, North Georgia at 2:00 p.m.
