Lady Indians Split 7-0 Games On Final Day of Mid-South Classic
SPARTANBURG, SC -- The Catawba College softball team split a pair of 7-0 games to close out the third day of the Mid-South Classic Sunday afternoon at Tyger River Park. The first game of the day was a win against St. Joseph’s (IN) before falling to North Georgia, the defending national champions. Catawba improves to 12-3 on the year while St. Joseph’s falls to 1-7 and North Georgia improves to 15-4.
In the opening game, Catawba’s Caroline Turner led the Lady Indians from the mound by throwing a one-hitter and allowing just two walks in the shutout. Turner added four strike outs to her totals in process.
Offensively, Catawba scored all seven runs over two innings to break the game wide open. The first big inning produced four runs in the bottom of the first while the Lady Indians added three more runs in the fifth.
Catawba’s Kristen Stinnard, Gina Gerone and Delane Smith each recorded two hits in the game, including a double by Smith. Turner and Leah Huggins also contributed a hit in the win.
In the second game of the day, Carley Tysinger took the mound for Catawba who pitched a complete game. Tysinger recorded seven strikeouts and a walk. The starter was only credited for three of the seven runs scored after the Lady Indians defense recorded two errors.
North Georgia struck early as Meredith Heyer recorded a two run homerun off Tysinger in the first inning. Heyer added to the lead when she tallied a double to bring in Jessica Finch in the third. In the fifth, Finch recorded a double and later scored as the Indians committed an error trying to get Heyer out at first. Heyer would later score to bring the game to 5-0.
In the top of the seventh, Catawba opened the inning with an error to allow Megan May to reach base. A few batters later, May found herself on third with Heyer at the plate to produce a sacrifice fly to make the score 6-0. Brittani Crawford will single in the final run of the game shortly after.
Catawba produced just three hits in the game behind a Katherine Shumaker double. Stinnard and Tysinger earned the other two hits.
Courtney Poole threw all seven innings for North Georgia, recording eight strikeouts and allowing two walks.
Catawba will return to action on Tuesday as they host Pfeiffer at 1:00 p.m.
