Indians Drop Two to Pfeiffer
SALISBURY, N.C. -- The Catawba College softball team dropped a pair of games to Pfeiffer University Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at Whitley Field. The Pfeiffer Lady Falcons defeated Catawba 3-2 in the first game and then 6-3 in the second half of the double header. The losses leave Catawba standing at 12-5 on the year while Pfeiffer improves to 12-8.
In the first game Catawba jumped out early with a two run second inning. Catawba pitcher, Carley Tysinger, led off the inning with a walk. After a wild pitch Tysinger was standing on second without an out. A Delane Smith groundout left advanced Tysinger to third before a Caroline Turner single scored her. With the bases loaded, Holli Chandler drove a hard grounder past second base to score Turner.
Catawba held the lead until the sixth when Pfeiffer retook the lead. After a leadoff walk, a double by Kiana Millsaps put two runners in scoring position. Jessica Jackson took advantage with a single to center to bring in one run as Jackson advanced to second on the throw home. A wild pitch scored Millsaps and placed Jackson at third with the score tied at two. Bailey Sherrill came through for the Falcons with a sacrifice fly to drive in Jackson for the winning run.
Tysinger took the loss on the mound of the Lady Indians after giving up three runs on four hits. The starter walked two, but struck out eight. Pfeiffer's Sydney Poole claimed the win after three innings of relieve where she surrendered just two hits and struck out two.
In the second game Pfeiffer drew first blood in the top of the first with two runs on four hits off Catawba's Turner.
Catawba closed the game in the second inning after a pair of singles put runners on first and second. Ashley Wagoner popped up a potential third out of the inning but Pfeiffer pitcher, Sam Jarmusch, dropped the ball to score Taylor Adams.
Pfeiffer would score two more in the fifth and one in the sixth to claim a 5-1 lead. In the bottom of the six Catawba added one more after Tysinger reach based on a single through the left side. A groundout put Tysinger on second before scoring on a throwing error to get Katherine Shumaker out a first.
A Millsaps bomb to left field in the seventh brought the Pfeiffer lead back to four runs at 6-2. Catawba would only be able to add one more in the seventh after Smith scored on a fielding error.
Turner lasted all seven inning for Catawba, surrendering six runs on nine hits and five walks. The sophomore recorded six strikes in the process.
Pfeiffer's Callie Kuykendall recorded the save in the first game, but tallied the win in the second. Kuykendall threw five innings in relief and allowed five hits and two runs in the game. All three of Catawba's runs were unearned though. Jarmusch gave up two hits in her two innings of appearance.
Catawba will travel to Young Harris on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
