Baseball Takes 10-2 Win at Mount Olive


MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. -- Catawba claimed a 10-2 road win at Mount Olive in baseball action on Tuesday at Scarborough Field.  The Catawba Indians improve to 7-6, while the Trojans fall to 6-5.

Riley Myers (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) tossed six innings to get the win, while Malachi Hanes (Charlotte, N.C./Butler) had two triples among his three hits and drove in a pair of runs.  Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan) had two hits and three RBI.

Mount Olive took a 1-0 lead after an inning as Zak Orrison led off with a double and scored on a single by Brett Lang.  Catawba came back with a four spot in the second. 

Hanes led off the frame with his first triple and scored on Emmitt Carden’s (Whispering Pines, N.C./Union Pines) safety squeeze.  Setzer singled home a run, while Will Albertson (Sophia, N.C./Randleman/Campbell) and Dylan Richardson (Randleman, N.C./Randleman/Appalachian St.) capped the inning with sacrifice flies.

Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) and Jake Kimble (Concord, N.C./Mt. Pleasant/Liberty) singled in a run in the fourth and fifth before the Indians put the game away with another four-run inning in the sixth.  Hanes had a two-run triple and Setzer a two-run double to account for the scoring.

Myers (1-0) went six innings to post his first collegiate win.  He allowed two runs on six hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts.  Avery Bowles (Thomasville, N.C./E. Davidson), Clay Young (Greensboro, N.C./Caldwell Academy) and DJ Laxton (Asheboro, N.C./E. Randolph) closed the game out as each threw a hitless inning of relief.  

Carden joined Setzer with two hits and scored three runs.  Kimble drove in two runs.

Catawba travels to Belmont Abbey on Wednesday at 5 pm to make up a game rescheduled from February 3 due to rain.
