Women's Lacrosse Falls to Queens in SAC Opener
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Queens, ranked 15th in NCAA II, got four goals from Kelly Dowd in topping host Catawba 16-10 in South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The Royals stay undefeated, moving to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 2-1 and 0-1.
Catawba's Meredith Jones (Barnesville, Md./St. Johns Catholic) assisted on the opening goals then scored the second for the Lady Indians, putting the hosts up 2-1 after two and a half minutes. Queens would use an 8-0 run to gain control and led 9-3 at the break. Dowd had two goals in the run as did Shannon Mansberger.
After Queens scored the opening goal of the second half, Catawba tallied four of the next six to close the gap to 12-7 with 16:47 left. Jones and Megan Shortt (Kernersville, N.C./E. Forsyth) each had two goals to get Catawba close. Queens answered those goals with a pair three minutes later for a 14-7 edge. Catawba would again reduce the margin to five with 10 minutes remaining, but couldn't get any closer.
Abigail Paulus handed out four assists for Queens and scored one goal. Mansberger, Maggie Masters, Hanna Scott and Alexandra Bruder all had two goals. Christine Wiese recorded six saves in goal.
Jones led Catawba with four goals and a pair of assists. Shortt and Alyssa Corace (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) each scored twice with Shortt adding an assist and winning four draw controls. Bethany Davis (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) posted a dozen saves for the Lady Indians.
Catawba returns to action on Monday as the Lady Indians host Shippenburg at 4 pm.
