Baseball Drops 9-4 Decision to Belmont Abbey
BELMONT, N.C. -- Belmont Abbey picked up a 9-4 win over visiting Catawba in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Abbey Yard. The Crusaders improved to 13-3-1, while the Catawba Indians fell to 7-7.
Nick Beinlich's two-out double in the fifth snapped a 3-3 tie and sparked Belmont Abbey to the win. The Crusaders added two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to pull away.
Catawba scored in the top of the first as Dylan Richardson (Randleman, N.C./Randleman/Appalachian St.) singled home Jake Kimble (Concord, N.C./Mt. Pleasant/Liberty) with two outs. Belmont Abbey struck for three in the bottom half on back-to-back home runs by Weston Clarke and Beinlich.
The score stayed 3-1 until the fifth. An Austin Stilley (Thomasville, N.C./Ledford) ground out plated Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury), who had led off with a single. Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan) followed with a single to tie the game, scoring Malachi Hanes (Charlotte, N.C./Butler), who had reached on an error.
Belmont Abbey got the eventual winning run with a two-out rally and none on. Clarke singled and scored from first on the Beinlich double. In the sixth, the Crusaders scored twice without a hit. A hit by pitch and walk was followed by a strikeout before an intentional walk after a wild pitch loaded the bases. Colin Rosenbaum walked to force home a run with the second scoring on a wild pitch.
Lorenzo Wright doubled home a run in the seventh and Rosenbaum capped the scoring with a two-run single. Clarke and Beinlich each had three hits and drove in two. Mike Davenport improved to 1-0 as he tossed five innings and allowed one earned run off three hits.
Catawba returns to league action this weekend, hosting Tusculum at Newman Park for a three-game series. The series will start with a single game on Friday at 6 pm. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 pm.
