Men's Lacrosse Falls Short in Upset Bid of Queens

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Queens pulled away in the final quarter to post a 14-11 win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium.  The Royals, ranked 17th in NCAA II, improve to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the SAC.  The Catawba Indians fall to 0-3 and 0-1.

The teams were never separated by more than two goals until a tally by Royal Garrett Sadler with 3:27 remaining accounted for the final margin.  Queens never trailed, but saw Catawba tie the game five times.

Liam Lynch (Marietta, Ga./Pope) led Catawba with three goals and added an assist.  Joe Barber (Upper Marlboro, Md./Bishop McNamara) and Connor Kennedy (Weddington, N.C./Weddington/Tampa) each had a pair of goals.  Sadler scored three goals for Queens and added an assist.  Jesse Oliver, Griffin Stechmiller and Nick Carlson all had two goals.

Oliver netted the first goal of the game at the 11:44 mark of the first quarter.  Down 2-0, Catawba scored twice in 18 seconds to tie the game midway through the quarter.  Queens would score two more before again seeing the Indians post a pair of goals to pull even.  Kennedy and Barber scored nine seconds apart in the final 30 seconds of the opening quarter to make it 4-4.

Carlson put home two goals for Queens to start the second quarter, but Lynch and Reid Lichtenberger (Austin, Texas/Vandergrift) had two for Catawba to tie the game at six.  Oliver scored with 1:43 left before the half to give Queens a 7-6 edge at the break.

Lynch tied the game again early in the third before Stechmiller scored back-to-back to send the Royals ahead 9-7.  Kennedy and Barber answered those two goals to make it 9-9 with 4:05 to go in the quarter.  Queens retook the lead 17 seconds after Barber's tying goal and took an 11-10 lead to the final quarter.

Vincent Valenza gave Queens a 12-10 edge with 12:35 left.  Cole Fanzo (Crofton, Md./S. River) pulled that goal back with 11:14 remaining, but Sadler tallied twice for Queens in the final eight minutes to give the visitors the win.

Catawba held a 53-36 edge in shots with Eric Dolan making 22 saves for the Royals.   Ryan Applegate (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra) posted 11 saves for Catawba.  Connor Eakes (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield) dominated the face-offs, winning 20 of his 28 attempts.  He scooped up 13 ground balls.

Catawba returns to action next Saturday with a league contest at Lincoln Memorial at 2 pm.
