Softball Splits Doubleheader at Young Harris

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. -- Catawba and host Young Harris split a softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Rivers Field.  The Catawba Indians, ranked 17th in NCAA II, dropped the opening game 3-1, but came back to win game two 3-2 in eight innings.  Catawba moves to 13-6 on the year, while the Mountain Lions are 14-6.

Young Harris battled back from a 2-0 deficit to send the night cap to extra innings.  Catawba would take the lead in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Delane Smith.  Carley Tysinger was able to strand the Young Harris tiebreaker placement runner, getting a fly out and two ground outs to secure the 3-2 win.

The Lady Indians had struck for two runs in the second to take the early lead.  Tysinger doubled home a run and scored on a two-out double by Ashley Wagoner.  Young Harris cut the deficit in half in the fourth when Sarah Magill led off with single and scored on a ground out by Sara Beth Marquis.  Marquis doubled home Murphy Davis with two outs in the sixth to tie the game.

Tysinger picked up the win and moved to 8-3 on the year.  She went all eight innings and allowed two runs off four hits with nine strikeouts.  Tysinger also collected a double and a triple at the plate with the one RBI.
Hannah Harrison had two hits for Young Harris with Maquis collecting both RBI.  Jeanie Perrucci (1-4) took the loss despite not giving up an earned run over her five innings.  She allowed two hits.

After three scoreless innings of the opener, Chandler Stooksbury broke the drought with a two-out, two-run double to put Young Harris on top.  A two-out error led to a run in the fifth as the Mountain Lions built a 3-0 edge.  Catawba's lone run came on a leadoff home run by Smith in the seventh.

Smith had two hits in the loss, while Kristen Stinnard and Katherine Shumaker also had two hits.  Tysinger took the loss, going six innings and allowing three runs (two earned) off six hits with a dozen strikeouts.  Darby Stanford (11-1) notched the win for Young Harris as she scattered seven hits with four strikeouts in the complete game.

Catawba hosts UNC Pembroke in a rescheduled game on Monday.  The doubleheader starts at 1 pm.
