Late Scoring Forces Split Between With Barton
WILSON, N.C. -- The Catawba College softball team split a doubleheader with Barton College Wednesday afternoon in non-conference play at Jeffries Field. The Catawba Lady Indian pulled out a 6-0 victory in the first game but fell 7-2 in the second. The split moves Catawba to 15-8 on the year while the Barton Bulldogs now stand at 5-10.
A pair of three run innings late in the first game busted open the shutout performance for Barton pitcher Hannah Jones. Doubles from Morgan Brann and Kristen Stinnard led the charge for Catawba in the fifth.
Catawba continued the momentum in the top of the six when Brann singled to left to put runners at first and second. Ashley Wagoner loaded the bases with a pinch hit single to right center. Caroline Turner and Stinnard brought in two runs with back-to back singles to the left side of the field. Jones hit Delane Smith in the next at bat to score a third run in the inning before Barton managed to sneak out of the inning with bases loaded.
Senior, Carley Tysinger earned her tenth win of the season with the complete game shutout. The starter allowed six hits but struck out ten on the way to the win.
Jones was replaced by Carolina Merrill in the seventh but took the loss for the Bulldogs. Jones gave up seven hits, four walks and earned a pair of strikeouts in her six innings of work. Of the six runs scored Jones was credited for three of them. Merrill faced four batters in the seventh with Brann reaching on a fielding error.
The second game fared much better for the Barton offense despite Catawba jumping out to a 2-0 lead after the second.
Two Barton errors allowed Stinnard to score in the first inning before Katherine Shumaker homered in the second. Barton rallied with a run in the fourth, and three each in the fifth and sixth.
Turner took the loss on the mound for the Lady Indians after 5.2 innings of work. The sophomore finished the day with four strikeouts despite allowing eight hits and surrendering three walks. Tysinger relieved Turner in the sixth for the final out but gave up a hit before doing so.
Liz White claimed the win for Barton with a complete game. White gave up just three hits and a pair of walks before striking out five.
Along with Shumaker’s homer, senior Holli Chandler added a triple in the fifth inning but could not score. Smith recorded a single for Catawba in the sixth.
In the first game, the Catawba offense was led by two hits from Brann and Stinnard.
Catawba will return home on Saturday as they host Millersville for a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m.
