Albertson and Bowden Help Power Baseball Over Anderson in Series Opener

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Catawba pounded out 20 hits en route to a 24-3 South Atlantic Conference baseball victory over host Anderson on Friday night at Memorial Stadium.  Will Albertson (Sophia, N.C./Randleman/Campbell) had four hits, while Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) had five RBI in helping the Catawba Indians improve to 12-8 overall and 4-3 in the SAC.  The Trojans fall to 7-14 and 2-5.

Shaefer Shepard (Boca Raton, Fla./Boca Raton/Francis Marion) pitched seven innings to improve to 3-2 and got tons of early support from the hot Indian bats.  Catawba was aided by a pair of Anderson errors to plate four runs in the first.  Albertson hit a solo home run, his seventh, in the second before the Indians erupted for eight runs in the third to break the game open.

The big hits in the fourth were a two-run single from Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan) and a two-run double by Zach Almond (Richfield, N.C./N. Stanly/UNCG).  Anderson got a two-run single from Carson Barrett in the bottom of the third to make it 13-3, but the Indians were at it again in the fourth with four more runs.

Albertson had a double in the fourth for Catawba and Dylan Richardson (Randleman, N.C./Randleman/Appalachian St.) a RBI triple.  Malachi Hanes (Charlotte, N.C./Butler) capped the inning with a home run, his second in as many games.  Bowden doubled home two runs in the sixth and capped his night with another two-run double in the ninth.

Albertson's four-hit night included four runs scored at the top of the Indian order.  Almond and Bowden both had three hits with Richardson, Hanes and Jake Kimble (Concord, N.C./Mt. Pleasant/Liberty) all collecting two hits.  Setzer, Hanes and Kimble produced three RBI, while Albertson and Almond drove in two.

Shepard allowed seven hits over his seven innings.  Only two of the runs he allowed were earned and the junior struck out seven.  Ryan Kahny (High Point, N.C./Central) finished up and allowed just one hit with three strikeouts.

Barrett and Avery Sneed each had two hits for Anderson.  Nick Contafio (1-2) took the loss as he pitched into the third.

Nine of the Catawba hits went for extra bases with five double, two triples and two home runs.  The Indians also drew 11 walks and were hit by pitches three times.

The teams are slated to finish up the three-game series with a doubleheader beginning at 1 pm on Saturday.
