Morton hired as new Women's Basketball coachCatawba College has named Angie Morton, a 1984 Catawba graduate, as its new head coach for women’s basketball, announced today by athletic director, Dennis Davidson. Morton returns to her alma mater after serving as head coach at Pfeiffer University for the past seven seasons. “Catawba is elated with the addition of Angie Morton as head women's basketball coach,” stated Davidson. “She is an outstanding leader and coach who has a passion for basketball and her alma mater. “Angie did some great work at Pfeiffer, taking that program to the NCAA regionals last season, quite an accomplishment from where it was when she arrived.” During her seven years at Pfeiffer, Morton guided the Lady Falcons to a pair of Carolinas-Virginia Conference titles and the school’s first NCAA II playoff berth this past season. The back-to-back 20 win campaigns, including a 24-5 mark last season, earned Morton consecutive CVAC Coach of the Year honors. Pfeiffer knocked off Catawba last year, ending a span of six straight losses dating back to the 1991-92 season. Morton was also a CVAC Coach of the Year in softball in 2000 as she led Pfeiffer to the league crown. “Her philosophy off of the court is just as impressive, leading by example and seeing kids through to graduation,” added Davidson. “We are extremely excited that Angie will be leading the Catawba program.” Prior to her stint at Pfeiffer, Morton was the girls head coach at West Stanly High School for eight years. She guided the school to playoff appearances in all eight seasons and was RRC Coach of the Year in 1992. She also served as coach at Locust Elementary School and Knox Middle School. Graduating from Catawba in 1984, Morton earned a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education. At Catawba as Angie Crayton, she earned 10 letters, playing basketball, softball and field hockey. In basketball, Morton played in 86 games and averaged 5.5 points, netting a career high 26 in a loss to Wingate as a senior. She added 163 rebounds and 107 assists. Morton was a .367 career hitter in softball with nine home runs and 74 RBI. #######
