Early Penalty Costly for Men's Lacrosse in Loss to Bentley

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba came up two goals short in a 12-10 loss to visiting Bentley men's lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon at Shuford Stadium.  The Falcons, who are receiving votes in the national poll, improve to 1-1.  The Catawba Indians fall to 1-4.

Bentley jumped to a 4-0 lead in the opening quarter, taking advantage of an illegal stick penalty on Catawba to tally twice late in the period.  The Indians got on the board when Cole Fanzo (Crofton, Md./S. River) just beat the first-quarter horn to make it 4-1.

Catawba fought back throughout the second quarter and pulled within 6-5 after back-to-back goals from Fanzo at the 1:48 mark.  John Wheeler netted a goal in the final minute to give Bentley a 7-5 lead at the half.

The Indians would get within a single goal once again late in the third quarter on Dalton Cook's (St. Augustine's, Fla./Bartram Trail) goal at the 1:40 mark.  Bentley got another late tally, this one by George Cadillo with just six second to play in the third for a 10-8 edge.

The Falcons got two goals in the opening 1:10 of the fourth quarter to go up 12-8.  Matt Sanford got the final score a man-up with 13:50 left.  Catawba pulled two goals back late as Joe Barber (Upper Marlboro, Md./Bishop McNamara) scored with 3:29 to play and Connor Kennedy (Weddington, N.C./Weddington/Tampa) with 1:17 left, but couldn't get closer.

Fanzo scored three goals, all in the first half, for the Indians.  Kennedy and Justin Warnock (Jamestown, N.C./SW Guilford) scored a pair of goals with Warnock handing out an assist.  Barber had a goal and two helpers.

Sanford led Bentley with four goals.  Wheeler had two goals and two assists.  Daniel Shaughnessy made nine saves in goal.

Connor Eakes (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield) won 14 of the 25 face-offs for the Indians, but Catawba had 25 turnovers to 16 for the Falcons.  Bentley also had three man-up goals, while the Indians failed to score on its only man-up advantage.

Catawba returns to action on Saturday as the Indians travel to Mars Hill for a 5 pm start.
