Baseball Falls to UNC Pembroke in Tune Up For Big Weekend SAC Series
PEMBROKE, N.C. -- Host UNC Pembroke jumped on Catawba early and claimed a 9-3 win in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Cox Field. The Braves improve to 15-8, while the Catawba Indians fall to 13-10.
The Braves hit a pair of two-run homers in the first two innings and led 6-0 going to the third. Nick Debo hit the first one after a leadoff single by Roberto Rivera. Nick Salisbury connected in the second inning, while the Braves added RBI singles by Stibel Aleman Saba and Hayden Buffkin for the 6-0 edge.
It was 8-0 after six before the Indians finally got on the scoreboard as Kyle Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) led off the seventh with a home run. Dylan Richardson (Randleman, N.C./Randleman/Appalachian St.) accounted for the other Catawba runs with a two-run homer in the seventh.
Catawba managed just six hits on the day with Jake Kimble (Concord, N.C./Mt. Pleasant/Liberty) going 2-for-4. Will Albertson (Sophia, N.C./Randleman/Campbell) and Malachi Hanes (Charlotte, N.C./Butler) had the other two Indian hits.
The Braves rapped out 15 hits in the win. Rivera had three hits and scored twice. Debo, Saba, Buffkin and Nolan Pierce each had two hits. Matt Fuhr (1-1) was credited with the win as he started and went two innings in a predetermined rotation for the midweek affair.
D.J. Laxton (Asheboro, N.C./E. Randolph) faired the best of the four Catawba hurlers. He allowed a run off five hits over three and a third innings. Ryan Kahny (High Point, N.C./Central) got the start and allowed the two early home runs to take the loss in his first decision of the year.
Catawba hosts SAC-leading Lincoln Memorial for a three-game series this weekend at Newman Park. The series opens on Friday night at 6 pm with a Saturday doubleheader at 1 pm.
