Hanes Collects Three Hits and Homers in Loss to LMU
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Lincoln Memorial got past host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference baseball action, posting an 8-6 win on Friday night at Newman Park. The league-leading Railsplitters improve to 17-6 overall and 8-2 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 13-11 and 5-5.
Lincoln Memorial had just four hits over the first six innings, but two sixth-inning homers had the Railsplitters up 6-3. Catawba battled back to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth before LMU tallied the winning runs in the seventh.
Catawba starter Shaefer Shepard (Boca Raton, Fla./Boca Raton/Francis Marion) cruised through five innings, shutting out LMU on just two hits as the Indians went up 3-0. Kyle Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) drove in a pair of runs in the Catawba first with a two-out double. Malachi Hanes (Charlotte, N.C./Butler) added to the lead with a solo shot to start the fifth.
In the sixth, LMU came up with the big inning on just two hits, but both were three-run homers. Logan Augustine tied the game as he followed a walk and a hit batter with his homer. The next three-run homer, off the bat of Russell Clark, came after a batter walked and another reached on catcher's interference.
The Indians came right back to pull even as Jeremy Simpson (Cleveland, N.C./W. Rowan) and Dylan Richardson (Randleman, N.C./Randleman/Appalachian St.) led off the sixth with a single and double. Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan) hit a sacrifice fly and Hanes had a RBI single to make it 6-5. Hanes later came around to score on an error.
LMU got its winning rally started with two outs and nobody on in the seventh. Augustine was hit by a pitch and Eric Kalman singled. Wes Neiderland pulled a pitch down the right field line to give Lincoln Memorial a 7-6 edge and Clark singled home the final run.
Catawba threatened in the eighth and ninth, but left runners at first and second in both frames. The Indians would strand 14 in the contest, including 11 in scoring position. Dominic Morabito worked out of both innings to notch his third save.
Chase Randolph (1-1) got the win in relief of starter Brandon Jean. Jean went five innings and allowed four runs, two earned, off nine hits. Shepard (3-3) surrendered eight runs, seven earned, but fanned 11 in seven innings.
Richardson and Hanes each had three hits for Catawba with Simpson adding two. Clark had three hits for LMU with Augustine and Kalman collecting two hits.
The teams are scheduled to complete the series with a 1 pm doubleheader on Saturday.
