Hanes Named SAC AstroTurf Baseball Player of the Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) -- Catawba’s Malachi Hanes (Charlotte, N.C./Butler) was tabbed the Astroturf South Atlantic Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Zach Slagle of Tusculum was tabbed the Astroturf South Atlantic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week for games played March 14-20. It was announced by the league on Tuesday.
Hanes, a junior, posted seven hits, three home runs and a slugging percentage of 1.059 to lead the Catawba Indians to a 2-2 record last week, including a series win over League No. 1 Lincoln Memorial. He posted a pair of three-hit contests and highlighted his week with two homers, a double and six RBI in a 7-2 win over the Railsplitters on March 19. He drove in eight runs in the four-game span and added two doubles. Hanes finished the week with a .412 average at the plate with four runs scored. The honor is his first Player of the Week selection this season.
Slagle, a junior from Powell, Tenn., picked up a pair of wins in relief for the Pioneers last week. He pitched three shutout innings with five strikeouts as Tusculum rallied to defeat Virginia-Wise 12-6 on March 15. Four days later at Coker, Slagle inherited runners at first and second with one out in a 2-2 game. He posted a pair of strikeouts in his 1.1 innings of work as TC picked up the win, 3-2. He finished is two outings with seven strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. The honor is his first Pitcher of the Week plaudit this season.
