Baseball Tops Barton in 10 Innings
WILSON, N.C. -- Catawba pushed across four run in the 10th inning and topped host Barton 10-6 in baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Nixon Field. The Catawba Indians improved to 16-11 overall and earned Head Coach Jim Gantt his 699th collegiate victory. The Bulldogs fell to 17-10.
The Indians retook the lead in extra innings of the see-saw affair on Kyle Smith's (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) pinch-hit single. The hit scored Will Albertson (Sophia, N.C./Randleman/Campbell), who had led off with a double.
Before the inning was over, Catawba had scored four runs. Smith came across on an error before Jeremy Simpson (Cleveland, N.C./W. Rowan) plated two with his third hit of the game. Bryan Blanton (Albemarle, N.C./Albemarle) worked the 10th to lock up the win, allowing just a two-out walk.
Albertson joined Simpson with three hits. Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) had two hits and two RBI, which put the Indians up 6-4 in the eighth. Bryce Fowler (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood/Presbyterian) scored three runs.
Avery Bowles (Thomasville, N.C./E. Davidson) picked up the win in relief with two scoreless innings, improving to 2-0. He surrendered just one hit. DJ Laxton (Asheboro, N.C./E. Randolph) tossed two and a third hitless innings to get the Indians through six innings. Catawba used seven hurlers in the win.
Catawba went up 1-0 in the second as Fowler raced home on an error after a single from Simpson. Barton erased the deficit with one swing in the fourth, a three-run homer by Andrew Webster. It followed a walk and a hit allowed by Indian starter Riley Myers (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury), who had faced the minimum over the first three frames.
The Indians pushed across single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game, but missed on chances to break the game open by leaving the bases full in the fifth, sixth and seventh. Dylan Richardson (Randleman, N.C./Randleman/Appalachian St.) had a sacrifice fly in the fifth and Fowler scored on a wild pitch in the sixth.
Barton retook the lead in the seventh on a two-out single by Ben Youngblood. After Richardson reached on a bunt single to start the Catawba eighth, an error opened the way for three runs. Richardson scored on a wild pitch and Bowden doubled home two to put the Indians up 6-4.
The Bulldogs quickly tied it in the bottom half of the eighth on a triple by Calvin Hawke and a single from Webster. Bowles came on to get a pop up and double play to end the frame then stranded the winning run at third in the ninth.
Webster had three of Barton's eight hits and drove in four. Hawke added two hits and scored twice. Catawba left 15 men on base to just four for the Bulldogs.
Catawba will host Pfeiffer at Newman Park on Wednesday at 5 pm.
