Baseball Gives Gantt His 700th Win, Topping Pfeiffer 15-6

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba used an eight-run fifth to cruise past visiting Pfeiffer 15-6 in baseball action on Wednesday at Newman Park.  The win gives Catawba Head Coach Jim Gantt his 700th win as the Catawba Indians improve to 17-11 overall.  The Falcons fall to 11-19.

Will Albertson (Sophia, N.C./Randleman/Campbell) had two hits and drove in four, while Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) and Malachi Hanes (Charlotte, N.C./Butler) each had two hits and three RBI to pace a 15-hit Indian attack.  Each Catawba starter had a hit and the Indians also drew 13 walks.

Connor Johnson (Rockwell, N.C./E. Rowan) went five innings to improve to 2-2 and win his second straight start.  He allowed a run off three hits with three strikeouts.

Pfeiffer led 1-0 after Dylan Goodman's home run in the second.  Bowden erased the deficit with a two-run homer in the home half of the second.  A bases loaded walk to Bryce Fowler (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood/Presbyterian) added a run in the third and Albertson doubled home two with two outs in the fourth to up the lead to 5-1.

Fowler had singled home a run in the fifth to give the Indians a 6-1 lead, but Pfeiffer looked poised to get out of the frame without further damage until the Falcons misplayed a potential inning-ending double play grounder that opened the flood gates.  One run scored on the error and another on a walk to Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan).

After Albertson connected on his second two-run double it was 10-1.  Hanes brought home the final runs of the frame with a three-run homer.

Pfeiffer put up five runs in the eighth on a three-run homer by Zach Scudder and a two-run shot from Ryne Stanley.  Bowden and Austin Stilley (Thomasville, N.C./Ledford) had RBI singles for Catawba in the eighth for the final margin.

The Falcons collected nine hits on the night.  Damon Smith was the lone player with more than one hit with a single and a double.

Catawba returns to SAC action this weekend with a series at home against Mars Hill that begins on Friday at 6 pm.
