Women's Lacrosse Scores League Win Over Tusculum
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Host Catawba scored the opening three goals and never trailed in posting a 15-7 win over Tusculum in South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The Catawba Indians improve to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the SAC, while the Pioneers fall to 7-3 and 2-2.
Nicolette Salay (Columbus, N.J./N. Burlington Regional) had the first two goals for Catawba just 40 seconds apart to stake the Lady Indians to the lead in the opening three minutes. Tusculum's Savannah Elliott scored back-to-back to bring the Pioneers within 3-2 at the 23:46 mark. After trading goals, Catawba closed the half on a 3-0 run to lead 7-3 at the break.
Tusculum got the opening goal of the second half from Madison Malone, but Catawba would dominate the final 25 minutes. After the TC goal, the Lady Indians reeled off five in a row. Erin Green (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) put home the first and last goals of the run as Catawba went up 12-4 with 19:55 left.
Salay finished with four goals, while Green, Meredith Jones (Barnesville, Md./St. Johns Catholic) and Kirstyn Kruse (Sagamore Beach, Mass./Williston Northampton Prep) had two goals and two assists. Megan Shortt (Kernersville, N.C./E. Forsyth) and Hannah Scott (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's Co.) also had two goals.
Bethany Davis (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) recorded eight saves for the Lady Indians, including five on Tusculum free-position shots. Scott would add four draw controls and Gracie Wolfman (Georgetown, Texas/Georgetown) caused three turnovers and grabbed four ground balls.
Tusculum got two goals each from Elliott, Cheyenne Bray and Erin Sims. Malone had a goal and an assist.
Catawba will face another SAC test on Wednesday as the Lady Indians travel to Coker for a 5 pm start.
