Twelve Indians named to SAC pre-season Football team

Carson-Newman and Catawba, who have monopolized the SAC football championship over the past decade, appear to have the talent to keep that streak alive.  The Eagles, the defending SAC champions, lead the way with 12 representatives on the 2003 preseason All-Conference team, as selected by the league's Sports Information Directors. The Indians also placed a dozen on the teams. Both Carson-Newman and Catawba have eight first-team representatives.
Catawba's Luke Samples, who broke the Indians' single-season passing mark as a sophomore, is the First Team quarterback. He'll have plenty of protection from a pair of preseason First-Team selections in Joe Nixon and Daniel Lynch, while Cole Beane, a former First Team All-Conference selection, starts out on the second team. The Indians also return preseason First-Team selection Rodney Wallace, who led the league in rushing last year.  Rounding out the Tribe’s seven offensive selections are kicker Allan Rohrbaugh and tailback Mario Crowe.

The Indians had five defensive selections, indluding Samario Houston, last year's Defensive Freshman of the Year, who looks to continue Catawba's history of standout linebackers.  In the secondary, cornerback Jamel Jackson and safety Jemonte Battle were honored and selected for the defensive line were Khanis Hubbard and Piotr Kalinowski.

The Eagles will look to senior running back Damone Boone and wide receiver Mikkail Jenkins to spearhead the C-N offensive juggernaut. The Eagles aren't all about offense, however, with five representatives on the First Team Defense, including Clarence Glymph, Germon Spence and William Moody.

Tusculum also placed 11 on the preseason teams, including All-American offensive lineman Alan Dunn and return specialist wizard Donald Amaker.  Presbyterian College had six representatives. Wide receiver Terry Meng and punter Philip Bernardi were First-Team selections.  Mars Hill had a pair of running backs among its five members. Cedric Johnson was a First-Team selection, while Travis McFadden, the school's all-time leading rusher, is back after missing most of last year with an injury and is on the Second Team.

Jeremy Durham, Newberry's First Team All-Conference representative last season, returns for the Indians. Todd Jeter, who led the league in interceptions two years ago, also made First Team.  Wingate had four selections, all on the Second Team. Offensive standouts Zeke McKine and running back Antonio Hailstock lead the Bulldogs.  Lenoir-Rhyne placed three on the Preseason All-Conference teams, including tight end Ross Penland on the First Team. Chris Winford, a return specialist who was the 2002 Offensive Freshman of the Year, was a Second Team selection.
