Baseball Prevails For Two Wins in Doubleheader at Brevard
BREVARD, N.C. -- Catawba took both ends of a tightly contested South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader at Brevard on Saturday afternoon at Coan Field. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 7-5 and 8-6 to improve to 22-11 overall and 12-5 in the SAC. The host Tornados fall to 12-26 and 3-14.
Catawba snapped a 5-5 tie with a pair of runs in the ninth inning of the opener then held on as Brevard loaded the bases in the bottom half. In game two, Catawba rallied from an early deficit to lead 8-4 in the last inning then watched the pesky Tornados bring the tying run to the plate before recording the final out.
Will Albertson (Sophia, N.C./Randleman/Campbell) pounded out six hits in the two games with four in the opener. Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) and Bryce Fowler (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood/Presbyterian) drove in runs in both wins.
Albertson had hits in his first four at bats of the opener and snapped a 4-4 tie with a two-out single in the sixth that plated Jake Kimble (Concord, N.C./Mt. Pleasant/Liberty), who had led off with a walk. Christian Dix connected on a solo home run for Brevard in the eighth to knot the game at five.
The Indians came right back in ninth. Dylan Richardson (Randleman, N.C./Randleman/Appalachian St.) walked to start the frame and came around to score on a ball hit by Malachi Hanes (Charlotte, N.C./Butler) that the Tornados committed two errors on . Hanes would later score on a third Brevard miscue in the inning.
Bryan Blanton (Albemarle, N.C./Albemarle) entered for the ninth for Catawba and allowed just one hit, a lead off single by Kody Spencer, but a walk and hit batter with one out loaded the bases. Blanton settled down to fan the next two Tornado batters to notch his third save.
Shaefer Shepard (Boca Raton, Fla./Boca Raton/Francis Marion) threw eight innings to grab the win and improve to 4-3. He allowed the five runs off 10 hits. Shepard allowed just three base runners over his final four frames.
Albertson finished the opener with four hits and three RBI. Hanes and Kimble had two hits with Kimble scoring twice. Dix had four hits for Brevard. Kyle Pittman pitched into the eighth for the Tornados, while Drake Black (3-1) took the loss in relief.
Brevard struck for three runs in the second inning of the nightcap for the early lead. Parker Hubbard singled home two runs with Dix plating the final run of the frame. Fowler had a key hit for Catawba as he brought in a pair of runs on a two-out single in the third.
Catawba took the lead in the fifth on another two-out hit. Jeremy Simpson (Cleveland, N.C./W. Rowan) did the damage with a two-run single and later scored on an error to put the Indians up 5-3. Brevard scored a run in the fifth and looked for more. Avery Bowles (Thomasville, N.C./E. Davidson) entered with a pair of runners on and allowed an infield single, but Catawba was able to nail Blaine Durham at the plate trying to score from second.
In the sixth, Bowden doubled home two runs and Hanes added a RBI single in the seventh for an 8-4 lead. Bowles got two outs in the seventh then allowed a two-run homer to Jones and a single to Schuyler Martire. DJ Laxton (Asheboro, N.C./E. Randolph) came in to get a ground out to finish off the game and earn his first save.
Sean Grant (Statesville, N.C./W. Iredell) moved to 2-1 with the win. He went four and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on eight hits. Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan) had three hits and scored twice in game two. Bowden had two hits along with Albertson.
Jones and Martire both had three hits for the Tornados with Dix adding two more hits. Hunter Donaldson (2-6) took the loss as he allowed seven runs (four earned) off eight hits in five innings.
Catawba and Brevard will finish up the three game series on Sunday at 1 pm.
