Richardson Blasts Two Homers, Drives in Seven, As Baseball Pounds Mount Olive
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Senior Dylan Richardson (Randleman, N.C./Randleman/Appalachian St.) hit a pair of home runs, accounting for seven RBI, as host Catawba rolled to a 19-7 baseball win over Mount Olive on Tuesday at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians win for the 11th straight time in improving to 24-11. The Trojans fall to 18-15.
Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan) got Catawba going in the opening frame with a two-run homer, the first of five long balls for the Indians on the night. Zach Almond (Richfield, N.C./N. Stanly/UNCG) capped a five-run third with a three-run homer to push Catawba to a 7-1 lead.
The Trojans got back into the game after Brandon Day's two-run single in the fourth and Stephen Wallace's home run in the fifth to make it 8-4. Catawba would erupt for five in the fifth and six in the seventh to put the game away.
Richardson capped the fifth with a grand slam then added a three-run homer in the seventh. Will Albertson (Sophia, N.C./Randleman/Campbell) capped hit three hit day, all for extra bases, with a solo home run and extended his hitting streak to 18 games.
Both Richardson and Albertson led the 17-hit attack with three hits apiece. Almond, Bryce Fowler (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood/Presbyterian), Jake Kimble (Concord, N.C./Mt. Pleasant/Liberty) and Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) all had two hits.
Bowden added another double in a remarkable stretch that has seen the sophomore collect 17 two-baggers over the past 12 games. He has at least one double in all but one of the games and recently set another record by posting a double in eight straight games. Bowden has two or more hits in nine of the last 10 contests.
Riley Myers (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) went six innings as he improved to 2-0 on the season. He allowed four runs off six hits with four strikeouts and four walks. Heath Mitchem (Salisbury, N.C./Carson) made his collegiate debut and recorded a strikeout in a perfect ninth inning.
Day, Brett Lang and Joe Koehler, who also homered, had two hits for the Trojans. Josh Flott (2-3) took the loss, allowing seven runs over three innings.
Catawba hosts 10th-ranked Belmont Abbey on Wednesday at 6 pm.
