Women's Lacrosse Falls on Last-Minute Goal
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Brevard scored a tie breaking goal in the final minute to claim an 11-10 win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse action on Friday at Shuford Stadium. The Tornados improve to 8-5 overall and 4-3 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 5-7 and 3-3.
Shelby Klotz scored on a free position shot with just 40 seconds remaining to snap the 10-all tie. Catawba had one last chance, but Erin Green's (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) shot at the horn was saved by Shelby Arsenault.
Brevard had erased a 6-5 halftime deficit by scoring the first five goals of the second half to lead 10-6 midway through the final half. Catawba rallied back to tie the contest on a goal from Nicolette Salay (Columbus, N.J./N. Burlington Regional) with 5:59 to go.
The first half went back-and-forth with six ties and a pair of lead changes. Green gave the Lady Indians the halftime edge on her goal with eight seconds remaining.
Megan Shortt (Kernersville, N.C./E. Forsyth) led Catawba with three goals. Alyssa Corace (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) had two goals and two assists, while Kirstyn Kruse (Sagamore Beach, Mass./Williston Northampton Prep) put home two goals with one assist.
Klotz, Caitlyn Nemeth and Nina Siu all had three goals for Brevard. Siu added two assists, while Livia Harrenger assisted on three goals. Arsenault posted eight saves.
Salay added a pair of assists to go with her goal and also caused four turnovers. Hannah Scott (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's Co.) led the defense for Catawba with seven caused turnovers, five in the second half. She also scooped up seven ground balls.
Catawba will next host Saint Leo on Sunday at 1 pm.
