Softball Takes Two From Mars Hill
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba claimed wins in both ends of a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader against Mars Hill on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field. The host Catawba Indians put up 1-0 and 7-2 victories to improve to 29-10 overall and 13-1 in the SAC. The Lions fall to 11-20 and 5-9.
In the tight opener, Catawba pushed across the lone run in the bottom of the sixth. Kristen Stinnard led off with a single and stole second. Katherine Shumaker sacrificed Stinnard to third and Taylor Adams singled her home with a line drive single over second.
Carley Tysinger made that run hold up as she logged her eighth shutout of the season. The senior allowed just two hits, walked one, hit one and fanned 10. Stinnard and Adams each had two hits for Catawba, who tagged Shelby Culler (6-4) with the tough luck loss.
The Lions couldn't get a runner to third in the opener and only two reached second. Kayleigh Jonas singled in the second and got to second after a wild pitch and Jamie Booze doubled in the sixth with two outs.
The Lady Indians jumped out quickly in game two, scoring four runs in the first. Shumaker tripled home Caroline Turner with the first run and scored on a single by Adams. Gina Gerone capped the frame with a two-run double.
Catawba padded the lead in the fourth as it added three runs. Turner singled home one, while Shumaker had a sacrifice fly. Mars Hill avoided the shutout on a two-out, two-run homer by Ellen Tillman in the seventh.
Tysinger improved to 22-5 with the two wins. She fanned another 10 in game two and moved into ninth place on the NCAA career list with 1,218 in her four seasons.
Turner, Stinnard, Gerone and Morgan Brann each collected two hits for Catawba in the nightcap. Shumaker and Gerone drove in a pair. Tillman finished with two hits for the Lions.
Catawba will host Queens on Tuesday for a doubleheader beginning at 2 pm.
