Men's Lacrosse Stops Slide With Win at Shorter
ROME, Ga. -- Catawba snapped a three-game losing streak with a 10-8 win over host Shorter in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Ben Brady Field. The Catawba Indians improve to 5-7, while the Hawks fall to 4-7.
Catawba opened with three straight goals to lead 3-0 midway through the first quarter. Connor Kennedy (Weddington, N.C./Weddington/Tampa) put the Indians on top just a minute into the contest. Dalton Cook (St. Augustine's, Fla./Bartram Trail) followed with back-to-back tallies for the 3-0 edge.
Matt Kristiansen scored a pair of goals to pull Shorter within a goal before Kennedy responded with two tallies in just over a minute to put Catawba on top 5-2 at the 8:15 mark of the second quarter. Shorter got the final goal of the first half then picked up three goals to start the second half to lead 6-5 after Alex Malinowski's tally with 8:23 to go in the quarter.
Just eight seconds after Malinowski's goal, Connor Eakes (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield) pulled Catawba even, scoring after winning the face-off. Liam Lynch (Marietta, Ga./Pope) scored a man-up goal to restore Catawba's lead at 7-6.
Shorter tied it one more time with 11:25 to go, but Justin Warnock (Jamestown, N.C./SW Guilford) put the Indians up for good with 9:20 remaining. Isaiah Welch (Abingdon, Md./Patterson Mill) pushed the margin to 9-7 with 5:56 left before Shorter climbed back within a goal with 4:09 to go. Cook was able to give Catawba a cushion and after Eakes won the face-off, the Indians ran off over a minute on the clock to help ice the game.
The teams were virtually even in shots and ground balls with Catawba committing six more turnovers. Eakes helped offset that by winning 14 of his 21 face-offs. The Indians also converted two of four man-up opportunities while denying Shorter on its only man advantage situation.
Kennedy and Cook each scored three goals for Catawba. Lynch had a goal and an assist. Ryan Applegate (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra) made 17 saves in goal for the Indians.
Kristiansen scored three goals for Shorter with Malinowski adding two. Garry Robinson stopped a dozen shots.
Catawba travels to Pfeiffer on Wednesday at 7 pm.
