Bowden Raises Hit Streak to 16 Games in Doubleheader Loss to Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. -- Tampa completed a three-game sweep of Catawba by out-slugging the visitors in a baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the UT Baseball Field.  The sixth-ranked Spartans won by the scores of 11-7 and 15-10 to improve to 28-6.  The Catawba Indians fall to 24-15.

The Indians banged out 26 hits in the two games, but could not hold down the Tampa bats.  In the opener, Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan) homered and drove in three, while Jake Kimble (Concord, N.C./Mt. Pleasant/Liberty) rapped out three hits.

Catawba connected on five homers in the nightcap with Zach Almond (Richfield, N.C./N. Stanly/UNCG) going deep twice.  Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury), who had a hit in both games to extend his hitting streak to 16 games, also homered along with Dylan Richardson (Randleman, N.C./Randleman/Appalachian St.) and Malachi Hanes (Charlotte, N.C./Butler).

A two-run double from Kimble and a two-run homer from Setzer had Catawba on top of Tampa 4-0 in the fifth inning of the opener.  Tampa would answer those four runs in its own fifth and take a 7-4 lead in the sixth on a three-run homer by Casey Scoggins.

Catawba scored twice in the eighth to cut into a then 9-4 deficit and tried to pull off a dramatic ninth-inning rally.  With one out, Kimble walked and Richardson, Setzer and Will Albertson (Sophia, N.C./Randleman/Campbell) singled to make it 11-7 and bring the tying run to the plate.

Tampa went to the bullpen and Cody Martin got the Spartans out of the jam.  He got Bowden to pop up on a 3-2 pitch then struck out Hanes to post his second save.

Kimble drove in two on his three hits with Setzer picking up three RBI on two hits.  Albertson also had a pair of hits.  Sean Grant (Statesville, N.C./W. Iredell) started and pitched into the third before exiting after a knee injury covering first on an infield hit.  That was the only hit he allowed in his two and a third innings with a pair of strikeouts.

Richardson's homer tied game two at 1-1 in the third before Tampa pulled ahead with a six-run third.  Danny Lee had a three-run homer with Vin Cosenzo adding a two-run shot.  Bowden and Hanes homered in the fourth for the Indians to make it 7-3 then Tampa erupted for eight runs over the fifth and sixth frames to jump out to a 15-4 lead.

Austin Stilley (Thomasville, N.C./Ledford) had a pinch-hit two-run single for Catawba in the eighth and Almond added his second homer in the frame.  Hanes capped the scoring with his two-run homer in the ninth.

Richardson had three hits in game two.  Setzer, Bowden, Hanes and Almond all had two hits.  Bryan Blanton (Albemarle, N.C./Albemarle) tossed the final two innings for the Indians, striking out five of the six batters he faced.

Catawba is set to host Winston-Salem State on Wednesday at 6 pm.
