Women's Lacrosse Suffers Second Straight One-Goal Loss

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Saint Leo held on for a 15-14 victory over host Catawba in women's lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon at Shuford Stadium.  The Lions improve to 3-9, while the Catawba Indians fall to 5-8.

Catawba closed within 15-14 on a goal from Meredith Jones (Barnesville, Md./St. John's Catholic) with 2:02 remaining, but Saint Leo won the ensuing draw control and was able to run out the clock.  It marked the second straight one-goal loss for the Lady Indians.

The Lady Indians trailed 12-9 with just under 20 minutes to play then rallied with four straight goals to take its first lead since it was 2-1 just two minutes into the contest.  Megan Shortt (Kernersville, N.C./E. Forsyth) started the rally with consecutive free-position goals within 13 seconds to make it 12-11 at the 17:55 mark. 

Erin Green (Stratford, N.J./Sterling)  tied it with 16:10 to play and Jones converted another free-position to put Catawba up with 15:39 left.  Saint Leo would retake the lead on a free-position shot from Abbie Ross with 10:56 remaining.  Ross would add another goal to make it 15-13 with 3:07 to play.

The game was tied five times in the opening half before the Lions scored the final two goals before the break to go up 8-6.  Alyssa Corace (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and Jones quickly tied it for Catawba at the start of the second half.  Ross started a 3-0 run for the Lions at the 21:24 mark that led to the 12-9 lead.

Jones, Corace and Shortt each had three goals for Catawba.  Jones added two assists with Kirstyn Kruse (Sagamore Beach, Mass./Williston Northampton Prep) picking up two goals with two assists.  

Ross led Saint Leo with five goals.  Kelsey Burns added four goals with Caroline Fraser handing out six assists.  Allie Sheftall tallied three goals and won seven draw controls.

Catawba is home again on Wednesday as the Lady Indians host Pfeiffer at 7 pm.
