Kimble's Four Hits And Albertson's Five RBI Lead Baseball Past WSSU
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Host Catawba jumped on Winston-Salem State early and took an 18-5 decision in baseball action on Tuesday night at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians snap a four-game losing streak and improve to 25-15. The Rams fall to 18-18.
Will Albertson (Sophia, N.C./Randleman/Campbell) put Catawba on top to stay with a three-run homer in the bottom of the first. Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) followed with a double to extend his hitting streak to 17 games and scored on a ground out by Bryce Fowler (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood/Presbyterian) to make it 4-0 Indians after one frame.
The Rams cut the deficit in half in the top of the second on a two-run homer by Landon Steiner, but Catawba pushed across six runs in the second and four more in third to break the game open. The Indians sent a dozen men to the plate in the second, rapping out five hits with two walks and a hit batter. Zach Almond (Richfield, N.C./N. Stanly/UNCG) capped the third with a two-run homer.
Winston-Salem State kept the Indians off the board in the fourth and fifth and closed the gap to 14-5. It could have been closer, but D.J. Laxton (Asheboro, N.C./E. Randolph) got a double play grounder with the bases loaded to end the fourth after a run was in and struck out a Ram with the bases loaded to end the fifth. Ryan Kahny (High Point, N.C./Central) also induced a double play grounder with a pair of runners on and two already home to end the sixth.
After the Rams cut it to 14-5, Dylan Richardson (Randleman, N.C./Randleman/Appalachian St.) connected on a two-run homer in the sixth to make it 16-5 and the Indians added two more in the eighth. Following the sixth, Clay Young (Greensboro, N.C./Caldwell Academy) tossed a perfect seventh, Heath Mitchem (Salisbury, N.C./Carson) a perfect eighth and Bryan Blanton (Albemarle, N.C/Albemarle) struck out the side in the ninth while allowing a walk.
Jake Kimble (Concord, N.C./Mt. Pleasant/Liberty) delivered three hits for Catawba and Albertson drove in five, while scoring three times with a pair of hits. Richardson had three RBI and produced two hits along with Bowden, Almond and Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan).
Catawba returns to league action on Friday as the Indians start a three-game series at Carson-Newman on Friday at 3 pm.
