Indians Sweep Queens to Move to 15-1 in SAC
SALISBURY, N.C. -- A three run homer by Catawba College's Gina Gerone secured a sweep over Queens University in South Atlantic Conference softball action Wednesday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Catawba Lady Indians opened the doubleheader with a 9-1, five inning victory before Gerone's homer in the second game lifted Catawba to a 3-2 win. Catawba improves to 31-10 on the season and 15-1 in the South Atlantic Conference. Queens falls to 19-22 overall and 8-8 in the SAC.
In the first game, Queens plated their only run in the first inning due to a pair of doubles by Taylor Rosenbalm and Ashton Whitaker.
Catawba responded in the third with two runs to take the lead. The first run came on a Kristen Stinnard single to drive in freshman Lynnsey Taylor from third. Katherine Shumaker followed with a double to left center to bring in Stinnard from first.
The Lady Indians exploded in the fifth inning with seven runs to walk off with a 9-1 mercy rule. Holli Chandler reached on an error by Queen's first baseman, Whitaker, to open the inning. Taylor sprinted out a bunt single to move Chandler to second. After a force out at first and a walk for Stinnard, Shumaker singled to right filed to score Chandler and reload the bases. Despite changing pitchers, a Taylor Adams walk put Catawba ahead 4-1. A Gerone single and Carley Tysinger walk scored two more for the Indians. Chandler and Taylor both singled up the middle of the infield to score three and end the game. Morgan Brann scored on the Chandler single while Tysinger and Gerone scored on the Taylor at bat.
Tysinger took the win on the mound after holding the Royal to three hits and a run with a pair of walks. The senior tallied nine strikeouts in the victory.
Lyndey McCurry was credited with the loss after 4.1 innings from the mound. McCurry was responsible for seven hits and six runs, three of which were earned. The starter finished with a walk and two strikeouts. Evie Scott took the mound in the fifth for a third of an inning. Scott gave up three hits, three runs and two walks.
Errors plagued the Lady Indians in the second game as they committed four. An error in the first inning allowed Rosenbalm to score and put Queens ahead 1-0. Another error and subsequent wild pitch led to Queens' second run which came in the fifth inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, Adams singled and Brann walked to put two runner on base. Gerone's 0-1 hit to centerfield sailed over the wall to put Catawba up 3-2. Tysinger held off Queens in the seventh to secure the win.
Tysinger recorded her second win of the day after seven innings of work. The senior allowed two runs on four hits and two walks but struck out 11 in the process.
Scott started the game for Queens and lasted 5.1 innings before being replaced by McCurry. Scott was credited for the Adams and Brann runs while McCurry took the loss for giving up the home run to Gerone. Scott gave up five hits and two walks before striking out four. McCurry struck out one batter of her own.
Taylor led all Catawba batters with four hits in five at bats. Shumaker, Stinnard and Brann each recorded three hits over the two games.
Catawba will return to the field on Saturday as they travel to Anderson for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
