Corace's Overtime Winner Pushes Women's Lacrosse Past Pfeiffer
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Senior Alyssa Corace (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) scored with 34 second left in the first overtime period to give host Catawba a 12-11 win over Pfeiffer in women's lacrosse action on Wednesday night at Shuford Stadium. The win by the Catawba Indians (6-8) snaps a four-game losing streak, the last two by a single goal. It also improved the Lady Indians to 3-0 in overtime this season. The Falcons fell to 4-10.
Catawba got three goals and three assists from Meredith Jones (Barnesville, Md./St. John's Catholic) and two goals each from Megan Shortt (Kernersville, N.C./E. Pfeiffer held an 11-10 lead with just over five minutes remaining before a goal from Shortt pulled Catawba even with 5:05 left. Catawba had possession late, but a turnover in the final minute gave Pfeiffer a final chance in regulation. The Falcons drew a free-position shot with 12 second to go, but Davis made her biggest save of the night to send the game to overtime.
The Falcons won the overtime draw control, but Hannah Scott (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's Co.) caused a turnover just a minute into the period. The Lady Indians drew a free-position shot with 36 second left and Erin Green's (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) pass set up Corace for the winner.
Catawba had jumped to a 4-0 lead after 12 minutes, but Pfeiffer would cut the margin to 7-5 by the half. Gracie Herbert put home two goals for the Falcons in the opening five minutes of the second half to tie the score. Pfeiffer would take its first lead at 10-9 with 10:10 to go on a tally from Cheyenne Green.
