Men's Golf Slides Up One Spot at SAC Championships
ETOWAH, N.C. -- After a solid second round, Catawba moved up into a tie for 11th place at the 2016 South Atlantic Conference Men’s Golf Championships. The final round of the Championships will take place on Tuesday at the 6,892-yard, par-72 Etowah Valley Golf Club.
Jordan Taylor (Troy, N.C./W. Montgomery/Campbell) and Tyler Mulkey (Salisbury, N.C./N. Rowan/Charlotte) each shot 74s on Monday as the Indians took 14 shots off its first-round score, posting a team total of 303 in round two. Jay Minter (Sanford, N.C./S. Lee) came in with a 77 and Wes Cline (Thomasville, N.C./E. Davidson) posted a 78.
Taylor kick started his round after three bogeys with an eagle on the par-5 sixth. He added three more birdies in his round. Mulkey birdied his opening hole, but suffered a triple-bogey on the third hole. The sophomore rallied back with three birdies to offset three bogeys over the final 15 holes.
Minter posted one birdie and 11 pars in his round, while Cline took seven shots off his opening round score. Cline was one over on the front nine, but had a pair of double bogeys over his last six holes. Dagur Ebenezersson (Reykjavik, Iceland/Borgarholtsskoli) had a birdie on each side and recovered from a tough front to go +5 on the back.
Lenoir-Rhyne and Carson-Newman are still deadlocked after two rounds as both teams carded 296 scores on Monday. Lincoln Memorial climbed into third, two shots back, after a tournament low 293 in the second round. Jon Noble, of Queens, holds a one shot lead over Coker's Will Bundy for the individual lead. Noble followed his 70 with a 73, while Bundy fired a two-under-par 70 on Monday. Newberry's Fredrik Fossum is two shots back. First round co-leader Hunter McCombs, of Lenoir-Rhyne, fell off the pace with an 80 on Monday.
