Taylor Leads Men's Golf at SAC Championships
ETOWAH, N.C. -- Catawba wound up the 2016 South Atlantic Conference Men’s Golf Championships on Tuesday and finished 12th. The Championships were held at the 6,892-yard, par-72 Etowah Valley Golf Club.
Jordan Taylor (Troy, N.C./W. Montgomery/Campbell) led Catawba during the tournament, finishing 32nd with a three-round total of 228. Tyler Mulkey (Salisbury, N.C./N. Rowan/Charlotte) placed 36th after carding a 320.
The Indians started on No. 10 and the first five holes took its toll as the Catawba group went 18-over-par on those holes. The top four regrouped and finished the final holes at three-over-par and combined for a +12 on the final nine.
Taylor was +5 after six holes then offset two bogeys with two birdies to close the nine. He added one birdie on the final nine and finished with a 78. Mulkey birdied No. 18 then had a double and two bogeys on the final nine to match Taylor’s 78.
Wes Cline (Thomasville, N.C./E. Davidson) was the third Catawba golfer with a 78 on Tuesday. He had a birdie on the 15th and finished the round with eight straight pars. Jay Minter (Sanford, N.C./S. Lee) had one birdie in his round.
Lincoln Memorial rallied in the final round with a 286 to take the top spot by two strokes over Carson-Newman. Lenoir-Rhyne, who shared the lead with Carson-Newman after the first two rounds fell back to seventh after a round of 307. Coker’s Will Bundy took medalist honors after a one-over-par 73 left him on a 217 score. He was one shot clear of Carson-Newman’s Nick Kennedy and Jon Noble, of Queens.
