Softball Drops Doubleheader to Wingate
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Wingate scored a pair of wins over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference softball action on Wednesday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Bulldogs outlasted Catawba for a 4-2 win over 11 innings in the opener then claimed a 4-1 win in game two. Wingate improves to 28-14 overall and 13-7 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 33-12 and 17-3.
Catawba's Carley Tysinger (Lexington, N.C./C. Davidson) set a new conference and school mark for strikeouts in a season, finishing the doubleheader with 339 on the year. She also moved into eighth place on the NCAA II all-time list with 1,281 in her career.
The Lady Indians led the opener 1-0 after three innings. Caroline Turner (Kenly, N.C./N. Johnston) and Kristen Stinnard (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill) combined for back-to-back two-out doubles to put Catawba on top. Wingate answered in the top of the fourth, tying the game on Katie McLaurin's two-out single.
After the Bulldog run, Tysinger allowed just two base runners through the ninth. Naomi Sapp's two-out double in the seventh pushed a runner to third, but Tysinger got a ground out to end the frame. Catawba had the winning run at third in the seventh, eighth and tenth innings, but failed to score. The Lady Indians also had a pair of runners erased on the bases in the ninth, including Turner at the plate trying to score on a wild pitch.
Wingate has runners on the corners with no outs in the tenth before Tysinger worked out of it with a pair of strikeouts and a fly out. The Bulldogs broke through in the 11th. After an error put runners at first and third, Taylor Laskey doubled home two. She would score on a hit by McLaurin as Wingate went up 4-1.
Holli Chandler (New London, N.C./N. Stanly) got a run back with a single in the 11th, but Stacey Houser retired the final two batters to earn the win. Houser (17-11) went 11 innings giving up two runs (one earned) off six hits with three strikeouts.
Two of the four runs off Tysinger were earned as she surrendered 11 hits and fanned 10. She also collected two of the six Catawba hits. McLaurin had four hits for Wingate.
Mellena Helms opened game two with a double and scored on a wild pitch to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead. Catawba managed just two base runners over the first four innings and Wingate added a pair of home runs in the fifth to extend its lead. Emily Usiak led off the inning with a homer and Helms added another with two outs.
Catawba opened the sixth with consecutive singles by Stinnard and Katherine Shumaker (Blanch, N.C./Bartlett Yancy), but a fielder's choice and a double play grounder ended the threat. Morgan Brann (Beulaville, N.C./E. Duplin) hit a homer in the seventh to avoid the shutout.
Rachel Weidner improved to 11-3 as she allowed the single run off eight hits with four strikeouts. Usiak picked up three hits with Helms adding two.
Tysinger, now 26-7, struck out five and allowed seven hits in game two. Brann and Gina Gerone (Brooklyn, N.Y./Madison) had two hits.
Catawba concludes the regular season on Saturday as the Lady Indians travel to Tusculum for a 1 pm doubleheader.
