Late Rally Falls Short For Baseball at Wingate
WINGATE, N.C. -- Host Wingate rebounded to take the final game of a South Atlantic Conference weekend baseball series, topping Catawba 11-7 on Sunday afternoon at Christopher Stadium. The Bulldogs needed the win to gain a spot in the play-in portion of the SAC Tournament as they improve to 28-20 overall and 12-12 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians, who claimed the league title with a sweep of Wingate on Saturday, fell to 31-17 and 17-7.
Dylan Richardson (Randleman, N.C./Randleman/Appalachian St.) led off the game with a home run for Catawba, but the Bulldogs built a 5-1 edge after five innings. Micah Goodwin tied the game with a two-out single in the second and Austin Turgeon's sacrifice fly in the fourth gave Wingate the lead. Shane Billings added a two-out RBI single in the fourth and Tyler Simmons connected on a two-run homer in the fifth.
Hunter Morgan (3-2) limited Catawba to three hits over the five innings, but Kyle Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) took him deep in the sixth as the Indians pulled within 5-3. Bill Krebs answered those runs in the Wingate half with a grand slam and the Bulldogs added two unearned runs in the seventh following a two-out error to lead 11-3.
Catawba would load the bases in the eight with just one out, but Cameron Price was able to limit the Indians to just one run which came on a two-out walk to Austin Stilley (Thomasville, N.C./Ledford). The Indians mounted one last threat off Wingate closer Tyler Brown in the ninth.
Walks to Richardson and Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan) started the ninth and Will Albertson (Sophia, N.C./Randleman/Campbell) followed with a single to plate Richardson. After a strikeout, Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) singled to load the bases.
Bryce Fowler (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood/Presbyterian) drew a walk to force in a run to close the gap to 11-6 and Zach Almond's (Richfield, N.C./N. Stanly/UNCG) sacrifice fly made it 11-7. Brown was able to post a strikeout to end the game with the tying run in the on deck circle.
Albertson picked up three of the nine Catawba hits. Bowden collected two hits. Connor Johnson (Rockwell, N.C./E. Rowan) took the loss, dropping to 3-4. He gave up three runs off eight hits over three ands two-thirds innings.
Morgan struck out 10 in his six innings of work for the Bulldogs. Goodwin had three hits for Wingate, while each of the top six in the Bulldog order had two hits. Krebs posted five RBI.
Catawba returns to action in the SAC Tournament in Kodiak, Tenn., on Friday at noon.
