Shepard Claims Astroturf SAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week Honors
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) -- Catawba hurler Shaefer Shepard (Boca Raton, Fla./Boca Raton/Francis Marion) was tabbed the Astroturf South Atlantic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week, while Lenoir-Rhyne’s Ryan Perkins was tabbed the Astroturf South Atlantic Conference Baseball Player of the Week for games played April 18-24. It was announced by the league on Tuesday.
Shepard, a junior, struck out 10 hitters in a complete game win over Wingate on April 23. He did not allow a walk in his outing and had a stretch in the game where he retired 14 batters in a row. He allowed only two earned runs as only three Wingate hitters reached base in the first seven innings. The honor is his first Pitcher of the Week selection this season.
Perkins, a senior from Woodruff, S.C., batted .520 (13-of-25) with a home run and eight runs batted in to lead the Bears to a 4-1 week including a sweep of Anderson in the final South Atlantic Conference weekend series of the year. In the first game against the Trojans on Saturday, Perkins hit a walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning for the 5-4 victory. Perkins had at least two hits in all five games last week to go along with five runs scored and a .760 slugging percentage. The honor marks his first Player of the Week plaudit this season.
