Big Fourth Inning Pushes Softball Past Queens

HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- Catawba used a seven-run fourth to dispatch sixth-seeded Queens 9-4 on Friday morning to stay undefeated at the 2016 South Atlantic Conference Softball Tournament being held at Byerly Park.  The Catawba Indians, seeded second, improve to 36-13 and will face either Carson-Newman or Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday in the winner's final.  The Royals drop to 23-26 and will face an elimination game on Friday afternoon.

Queens had taken the lead with a pair of unearned runs in the top fourth.  Abby Lathan reached on an error to get the first run of the inning home, while Taylor Rosenbalm added a sacrifice fly for a 4-2 edge.  The Lady Indians then put together a huge inning to take command.

With one out, Holli Chandler (New London, N.C./N. Stanly) and Lynnsey Taylor (Hope Mills, N.C./Gray's Creek) singled.  Caroline Turner (Kenly, N.C./N. Johnston) doubled home Chandler and Kristen Stinnard (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill) singled home two to put Catawba on top 5-4.

Following a sacrifice fly by Katherine Shumaker (Blanch, N.C./Bartlett Yancy), Gina Gerone (Brooklyn, N.Y./Madison) and Morgan Brann (Beulaville, N.C./E. Duplin) singled.  Pinch-hitter Preston Ellenberg (Leland, N.C./N. Brunswick/Averett) drew a walk to load the bases and pinch-hitter Ashley Wagoner (Roaring River, N.C./E. Wilkes) cleared them with a three-run double and the 9-4 lead.

Carley Tysinger (Lexington, N.C./C. Davidson) settled down after Lathan reached on the error.  The senior, who improved to 29-8, retired 11 of the final 12 Queens batters.  The only blemish was a two-out single by Kayla Hall in the sixth.  Tysinger scattered seven hits with a walk and nine strikeouts.

A squeeze bunt single by Elaina Frantellizzi had given Queens a quick 1-0 lead in the first.  Catawba answered in the bottom half.  Turner led off with a walk, while Shumaker, Gerone and Brann followed with singles to get the Lady Indians on top 2-1.  Shumaker and Brann drove in the runs.  Queens tied it second on a home run by Hall before the deciding fourth frame.

Gerone collected four hits in the win for Catawba.  Shumaker had two hits and two RBI, while Brann also had two hits.  Turner scored twice.  Hall had three hits for Queens.
