Ashley one win from #300 as Volleyball opens on FridayCoach Ginger Ashley will be looking for a milestone as the Catawba College volleyball team opens the 2003 athletic season on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. against Slippery Rock in Goodman Gym. With her first victory of the season, Ashley, will become just the fourth Catawba coach to record 300 career wins with the Indians and only the third to do it in one sport. Sam Moir heads the list of all Catawba coaches with 546 wins in menís basketball, while Nan Whitley is second with 505. She has posted 377 in softball and another 128 in field hockey. Gordon Kirkland is next in line with 345 win, 179 in baseball, 107 in football and 59 in menís basketball. The Lady Indians, who claimed the 2002 SAC Championship, returns a strong nucleus for a try at a repeat run in 2003. The pre-season SAC favorites have four starters are back from last yearís team that went 13-1 in the league and were 25-7 overall. A loss to Carson-Newman in the SAC Tournament title match denied the Lady Indians a second straight trip to regional play. All-SAC picks Hope Miller and Crissi Harrison lead the returnees. Miller led the team with 366 kills and added 515 digs and 31 aces. Harrison posted 323 kills, with 128 digs, 100 blocks and 41 aces. The other returning starters are Elizabeth Hewitt (181 kills, 143 blocks) and Erin Naumann, the only senior on the squad. Naumann led the SAC and ranked third in NCAA II with 556 digs, flourishing in the libero position, added to collegiate play last season. After opening with Slippery Rock, Catawba will follow with another match on Friday, facing Virginia State at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Catawba Invitational continues with Catawba taking on UNC-Pembroke at 1:30 p.m. and Pfeiffer at 3:30 p.m. ######
