Baseball Closes Season With Loss to Mount Olive

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Seventh-seeded Mount Olive claimed a 6-4 win over sixth-seeded Catawba on Friday night in an elimination game of the NCAA II Southeast Region Baseball Tournament at Burger King Stadium.  The Trojans improve to 32-20 with the win and advances to another emilination game tomorrow at 5 pm.  The Catawba Indians ends their season at 34-21.

Mount Olive took the early lead with a pair of runs in the second.  Stephen Wallace walked to open the frame and Joe Koehler was hit by a pitch.  Both runners were sacrificed up and scored on a single by Bradley Ragan.  The Trojans would load the bases later in the inning, but Connor Johnson worked out of further damage.

Much like the opening game, Catawba had runners, but could not cash in for runs in the early going.  The Indians stranded five over the first five innings with four in scoring position.  Catawba would end up leaving 10 on base in the game with eight in scoring position.

The Trojans stretched the lead in the fifth as Jack Sherrill scored from first on a hit-and-run double by Brett Lang.  Lang would cross the plate on a hit by Koehler to push Mount Olive on top 4-0 which ended Johnson's night.  Ryan Kahny got the Indians out of further trouble with a double play grounder to short.

Catawba got off the deck in the sixth.  Singles by Will Albertson, Malachi Hanes and Chance Bowden loaded the bases with no outs.  With one out, Zach Almond's single got two in and Jeremy Simpson tied it with a single up the middle that scored two.

Mount Olive came right back in the bottom half.  Zac Orrison was hit by a pitch with two outs and went to second on a wild pitch.  He stole third then stole home when Catawba threw to first on a pick-off attempt.  The Trojans added another run on a hit by Lang.

Smith, Simpson and Dylan Richardson each had two hits for Catawba.  Simpson drove in two runs with Almond collecting the other RBI.  For the second straight game at the regional, the Indians out-hit their opponent in a losing effort.  Catawba had 11 hits to eight for the Trojans.

Austin HUtchison (7-3) pitched a complete game for Mount Olive.  He allowed 11 hits and four runs, three earned, while tossing 147 pitches.  He walked one and struck out a dozen.  Lang had two hits and two RBI, while David Mayo also had two hits and Ragan two RBI.
