Women's Soccer begins title defense on Saturday

The Catawba College women’s soccer team travels to Barton to open its season on Saturday. The Lady Indians return eight starters from its South Atlantic Conference Championship team of last year. The women’s soccer team, under third-year coach John Cullen, recorded a 15-3-1 mark last year and advanced to the NCAA Regionals, losing at North Florida in the opening round. Heading the list of returnees is 2002 South Atlantic Conference Freshman of the Year, Kyley Thompson. The forward led the team with 14 goals last season, but was lost to the team after breaking her collarbone in the SAC Tournament semifinals. Three other all-region and all-conference picks also return. Sophomore Maran Bock tallied eight goals and added six assists, Jamie Fink had eight goals and defender Lindsay Layman earned SAC Tournament MVP honors as the Lady Indians posted three straight shutouts to take the title. Jen Lowe, a 2000 All-SAC selection, returns to the team after not playing in 2002. #####
