Tight Early-Set Loses Drop Volleyball to 0-2 at Queens Invitational
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Catawba lost their second match at the Queens University Fall Invitational to USC-Aiken on Friday at the Levine Center. The Pacers won their season opener 29-27, 26-24, 18-25, and 25-7. The Lady Indians fall to 0-2 to start the season.
Catawba hit 16 percent for the match. McKenzie Garrison (Newton, N.C./Maiden HS) led the Lady Indians with 14 kills. Bri Howard (Graham, N.C./S. Alamance HS) and Alex Hopper (Madison, N.C./McMichael HS) each added 11 kills with Howard collecting four blocks. Setter Rachel Stanford (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee HS) handed out 43 assists with 14 digs and four blocks.
USC Aiken hit 19 percent and was led by Taylor Stratton’s 17 kills. Shawn Hotson added 15 kills and Julia Forster tallied 12. Danielle Mercer recorded 24 digs for the Lady Pacers.
Catawba took their first lead of the opening set after a kill by Hopper broke an 8-all tie. After tying the game at 10, USC Aiken went on a six point run before Catawba would score another point. Catawba battled back throughout the set to tie the game at 23-all after an attack error by Aiken.
Catawba utilized the error, as well as another Aiken error to take a 25-24 lead. Aiken battled back to take a 26-25 lead, but a kill by Garrison tied the game at 26-all. A kill for the Pacers broke the tie and gave them a 27-26 lead over the Indians. Howard had a kill to tie the game at 27. Aiken would score the final two points of the set on kills by Alicia Hines and Stratton to win 29-27. The Indians were led by Garrison’s four kills. Howard and Hopper added three kills each.
Aiken took a quick 8-4 lead in the second set, but Catawba fought back and tied it at 9-all and would take their first lead after a kill by Hopper. The Lady Indians kept battling and would tie the game at 19-all following a Pacer error.
A kill by Garrison gave Catawba a 21-20 lead. The set was tied again at 24-all after a kill by Audrey Hoffman (Dacula, Ga./Mill Creek HS). Two kills by the Pacers' Forster would give them the 26-24 set two win to take a 2-0 lead over the Indians. Hopper led the Indians in set two with five kills.
Catawba took the lead immediately in the third set and never looked back. The Lady Indians hit 38 percent and was led by Garrison’s seven kills. Evan Schultz (Richmond, Va./Monacan HS) tallied six digs and Meredith Furr (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill HS) added five. USC Aiken threatened Catawba’s lead one time tying the game at 4-all but never took the lead.
USC Aiken took the fourth set 25-7 to win the match 3-1. Catawba was led by Howard’s two kills. Furr tallied seven digs to finish the match with a team-high 26. Hopper and Garrison each added one kill. USC Aiken was led by Hotson’s five kills. Forster and Stratton added four and three, respectively.
Catawba will continue play in the Queens University Fall Invitational with a pair of matches on Saturday. The Lady Indians will face Augusta at 12:45 pm and Francis Marino at 5:15 pm.
