Men's Soccer Falls to Top-Ranked Pfeiffer in Opener
MISENHEIMER, N.C. -- Reigning NCAA II Champion Pfeiffer notched three goals over an eight-minute span midway through the second half to down visiting Catawba 4-2 in men's soccer action on Sunday night at Lefko Field. The top-ranked Falcons improve to 2-0, while the Catawba Indians fall in their opener.
The teams battled scoreless over the first 60 minutes before an onslaught of five goals over 13 minutes broke the deadlock. Jaime Siaj netted the first goal of the match in the 63rd minute. Alex Stoiljkovic sent in a long ball that Nathan Regis headed to Siaj, who beat Indian keeper Joe Gonzalez (Marion, N.Y./Marion/LeMoyne).
Catawba tied the game minutes late, equalizing with an own goal that was created by Jack Pettett (Hove, England/Bhasvic). Pfeiffer jumped back on top with a pair of goals a minute apart that proved to be the winners.
Regis headed home a ball from Santi Moar just three minutes after the Catawba goal and a minute later Cristobal Allendes netted a tally on a corner in the 71st minute. Siaj got his second goal in the 76th minute on a cross from Regis to push the Pfeiffer lead to 4-1. Pettett tallied in the final minute for Catawba as he put in a loose ball in the box.
Pfeiffer dominated the shot total with a 24-8 advantage. The Falcons put 11 shots on goal to three for Catawba. Pfeiffer also enjoyed a 14-2 edge in corners. Gonzalez made six saves for the Indians, while Tomas Correa stopped just one shot for Pfeiffer.
Catawba travels to Mount Olive for its next match on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
