Women's Soccer Loses Opener in Overtime
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Flagler rallied from two goals down to grab a 3-2 overtime win over visiting Catawba in women’s soccer action on Monday afternoon at Saints Field. It marked the opener for both teams.
Catawba jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the half on a pair of goals from freshman Shelby Vasich (Chatsworth, Calif./El Camino Real). Vasich netted her first career goal just three and half minutes into the match. The freshman added her second off a cross from fellow freshman Anna Sidders (Matthews, N.C./Union Academy) in the 21st minute.
Flagler battled back to tie the match in the second half, scoring twice off rebounds of saved shots. Charlene Nowotny picked up the first Saints goal in the 54th minute off a shot from Fio Fustagno. The Saints equalized 10 minutes before the end of regulation. With a free kick just outside the box, Abby Austin touched home a rebound to tie the score.
Catawba had a shot on goal in the final minute, but Bailey Howell’s attempt was turned away by Racheal Cecil, who had entered the game just seconds before. Flagler had the only three shots in extra time and Delaney Savacool put home the winner in the 100th minute.
The Saints held a 23-14 edge in shots and put 17 on goal to seven for Catawba. Maddison Lipson played the first 89 minutes in goal for Flagler and had four saves. Cecil stopped the only shot she saw on goal. Freshman Shannon Hardy (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) recorded 14 saves for Catawba, the seventh most in a match in school history.
Catawba returns to action on Saturday with a 2 p.m. match at Belmont Abbey.
