Proch Converts OT Penalty Kick to Lift Men's Soccer Over Mt. Olive
MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. -- Freshman Daniele Proch (Arco, Italy) converted an overtime penalty kick to give visiting Catawba a 2-1 win over Mount Olive in men’s soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Amon Field. With the win, the Catawba Indians level their record at 1-1. The Trojans fall to 0-2.
About seven minutes into overtime, Jack Ragen (Terrigal, Australia) slid a ball between defenders to free Proch, who was taken down by Mount Olive goalie Nick Bernsdorf. Proch would step up and deliver the winner at the 97:14 mark.
Proch had assisted on Catawba’s first goal after a scoreless first half. In the 55th minute, he drove toward goal and sent a pass from the left across the box to Tyus Lopez (Charlotte, N.C./Mallard Creek) at the back post. Lopez easily tallied into an open goal. Mount Olive was able to equalize on its own penalty kick in the 72nd minute. Stefan Faria got the penalty past Joe Gonzalez (Marion, N.Y./Marion/LeMoyne), who nearly made the save.
Gonzalez had another solid game in goal for the Indians, stopping five shots. Bernsdorf came up with three saves for the Trojans.
Catawba will host Newberry next Wednesday in its home opener at 7:30 p.m.
