Volleyball gets 300th win for Ashley in season-opener

SALISBURY, NC Catawba College opened its 2003 volleyball campaign with a pair of wins at the Catawba Invitational on Friday at Goodman Gym. With the opening win, a 30-18, 30-21, 28-30, 30-23 decision over Slipper Rock, Ginger Ashley recorded her program-leading 300th win. She becomes only the fourth Catawba coach to reach 300 wins. Catawba also defeated Virginia State by the scores of 30-13, 30-18 and 30-13. Against Slippery Rock, Catawba jumped to a quick 6-1 lead in the opening game behind a kill and a pair of blocks by Elizabeth Hewitt (Hickory, NC). The Rockets fell down 22-11, but would eventually bring the score to as close as 23-17 before the Lady Indians regained momentum. Sophomore Summer Zuck (Kingston,TN) had a pair of kills in the final 5-0 run to end the game. Catawba pulled away late in game two. Leading 21-20, the Lady Indians scored nine of the final 10 points, including the last seven, three on aces by Stephanie Brendel (Drexel, NC). Slippery Rock jumped out to a 19-13 lead in the third game and held on for the win. Jen Houser (Grafton, OH) had a big game, recording seven kills and an ace to lead the Rockets. Catawba again used a late run to close out the match in the fourth game. The Lady Indians scored 10 of the last 15 points. Crissi Harrison (Hickory, NC) eight kills in the game, finishing with a game-high 13. Hope Miller (Newton, NC) added eight kills, a team-high 21 digs and three aces. Hewitt had seven kills and eight blocks, while Brendel finished with five aces. Sophomore Nicole Scheidt (China Grove, NC) registered 42 assists. Catawba made short work of Virginia State. The Lady Indians built an 11-2 lead to start and enjoyed a 10 point run later in the game. Miller led the way with five kills in the game. A pair of late aces by freshman Stacey Evans (Newton, NC) helped Catawba to the win in game two. Freshman Amanda Nantz (Troutman, NC) had a kill, two blocks and a pair of aces in game three, while Crystal Bonner (Yadkinville, NC) added two aces and a pair of kills. Miller led the way with 10 kills against the Trojanettes, adding thee digs and a pair of aces. Erin Naumann (Cave Creek, AZ) posted 11 digs. #######
