Men's Golf Wins Anderson Inv; Sheppard Takes Medalist Honors
ANDERSON, S.C. -- Catawba topped the ten-team field to claim the championship of the Anderson Invitational Men’s Golf Tournament. The Catawba Indians took a four-shot win over Southern Wesleyan, finishing with a 595 total on rounds of 295 and 300. The two-round event concluded on Tuesday at the 7,005-yard, par-72 Cobb’s Glen Country Club.
Catawba freshman Mack Sheppard (Harrisburg, N.C./Hickory Ridge) took home medalist honors, holding off Belmont Abbey’s Jacob Scruggs by a single shot. Sheppard followed his opening four-under-par 68 with a 76 on Tuesday to finish at 144. Scruggs posted a 73 in round two after an opening 72 for a 145.
Sheppard was joined on the all-tournament team by Tyler Mulkey (Salisbury, N.C./N. Rowan/Charlotte). The junior was fifth with rounds of 75 and 73, just four shots behind Sheppard. Sophomore Trey Burton (Hickory, N.C./Newton-Conover) had a top ten, finishing in seventh with a 150 score.
Sheppard fired eight birdies over the two days, two off the tournament best. Burton tallied six birdies with Mulkey adding five. Sheppard tied for the best par-three scoring at one-under-par. He played the par fours at one-under as well, while Mulkey posted an even par on those holes.
Catawba will play in the Queens Collegiate being held at Irish Creek Country Club in Kannapolis, N.C., next Monday and Tuesday.
