Volleyball to Play Fight Like A Girl Matches for Meme Brown Scholarship
During the Catawba Volleyball Team's Teal Weekend the team will be taking donations for the Meme Mckensie Brown Fight Like A Girl Scholarship. The Fight Like A Girl Scholarship matches will take place on September 29th when the Catawba Indians take on the Queens Royals at 7 p.m. and on Saturday when Catawba faces the Wingate Bulldogs at 2 p.m. The family of Meme Brown, former club volleyball player who lost her fight with ovarian cancer at 21, has created a scholarship in Meme’s memory. September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. More on Meme’s story is below.
Fight Like a Girl Scholarship
At the age of 18, Meme Mckensie Brown had her whole life ahead of her. She was an excellent student and athlete at Starmount High School in Boonville, NC. She participated in volleyball, basketball and track/field and was living life to its fullest, all the while loving those around her, especially her parents and big brother, Tyler, whom Meme affectionately called ‘Brother’. With her active schedule at school and at the church, she dearly loved Boonville Baptist Church, Meme’s life really couldn’t get any better. In April of Meme’s senior year of high school, her life was derailed. After telling her mother that she didn’t feel right, it was found that she had a ‘mass’ in her abdomen, determined to be the size of a basketball. Meme was diagnosed with Sertoli-Leydig-cell tumor of the ovary, an extremely rare cancer. Although the initial results indicated that the mass was not cancerous, in December of the same year, Meme had surgery for another mass and this one was malignant. Thus became Meme’s life for the next 3 years; in and out of the hospital with surgeries and chemotherapy with her mother, father and ‘Brother’ by her side. Each time it was believed that the chemo had been effective, the cancer returned. But Meme’s story is not about the battle, but the grace of one special young woman facing some insurmountable circumstances.
Even through her diagnosis and treatment, Meme was determined not to let something as ‘minor’ as cancer and chemo stop her from living the life she loved. With a scholarship for volleyball to Lees-McCrae to study education, Meme set out to start her college career with a personal assistant - her dad. Trips to the hospital continued as Meme went on with her life; she never stopped enjoying life nor did she ever question ‘why me’ or become bitter. Eventually Meme transferred to ASU to study nursing because she wanted to be able to help others as she had been helped. Meme believed that God would provide and He did and He continues to do so,” David commented. On October 15, 2012 at the age of 21, God provided Meme a place in heaven. Since then her family and friends continue to thank God that Meme was part of their lives. They established a scholarship so that the love Meme had to help others continues.
