Women's Soccer Blanks Newberry For First Win
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba claimed its first win of the season with a 3-0 shutout of visiting Newberry in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Wednesday at the Frock Soccer Complex. The Catawba Indians improve to 1-1-1 overall and 1-0 in the SAC. The Wolves fall to 1-4 and 0-1.
Bailey Howell (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) notched the opening goal in the 10th minute. The freshman fired home a goal from the top of the box that glanced off the fingertips of Newberry keeper KodiJean Johnson and into the top right corner.
The Lady Indians doubled their lead late in the first half. Nicole Duncan (Cornelius, N.C./Hough) played a perfect through ball from her own half of the field to send Caitlin Hill (Advance, N.C./W. Forsyth) free. Hill made a cut to the center at the top of the box past a Newberry defender and shot back to the left corner.
Catawba iced the match in the 68th minute as Howell fed a ball to Kiersten Peck (Indian Trail, N.C./Sun Valley) at the back post. Her shot glanced off the right post for a 3-0 edge.
Shots were even in the match at 15 each, but Catawba put 10 on goal, four more than Newberry. The Lady Indians produced seven corners to Newberry’s two. Liz Nail (King, N.C./W. Stokes) kept the clean sheet in goal for Catawba, stopping six shots. Johnson had five saves in goal for Newberry in the first half. Madison Putman had two saves over the final 45 minutes.
Catawba will face another league test on Saturday, traveling to Mars Hill for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
