Men's Soccer Takes Down Newberry in Home Opener
SALISBURY, N.C. -- The Catawba men’s soccer team won its home opener for the first time since 2013 with a 2-1 victory over visiting Newberry on Wednesday night at the Frock Soccer Complex. The Catawba Indians improve to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the South Atlantic Conference. Newberry falls to 2-2 and 0-1.
After scoreless first half, second-half substitute Tobias Iriah (London, England) made his presence felt just five minutes in as he tallied off a pass from Matt Wilkinson (Leeds, England). Four minutes later Daniele Proch (Arco, Italy) added a second Indian goal, burying a pass from Ian Orr (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman).
Newberry made it interesting late as a loose ball bounced out of the Catawba box to Sterling Wendt, who hit a one-timer to left of Catawba keeper Joe Gonzalez (Marion, N.Y./Marion/LeMoyne). The Indians kept the Wolves to just the single tally in posting the win.
Catawba dominated the shot total with a 17-6 margin. The Indians also held a 10-4 edge in corners. Gonzalez collected four saves, while counterpart Brad Dixon stopped six shots.
Catawba is back in action on Saturday with a 4:30 p.m. kickoff at Mars Hill.
