Scheidt takes MVP honors as Volleyball goes 4-0 at Catawba Inv.

SALISBURY, NC Catawba College remained undefeated claiming two more wins in the final day at the Catawba Invitational Volleyball Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. Catawba defeated UNC-Pembroke 30-17, 30-23 and 30-21, then topped Pfeiffer 30-20, 30-25 and 30-27. The Lady Indians are now 4-0 on the season. Against UNC-Pembroke, Hope Miller (Newton, NC) posted a dozen kills, with 10 digs and four aces to help the Lady Indians to the sweep. She had three kills and three aces in the opening game as Catawba raced to a 9-2 lead, then scored 17 of the last 23 points. Miller and Elizabeth Hewitt (Hickory, NC) helped Catawba take a two-game lead. With the game tied at 10-10, Hewitt had a kill and ace in a 5-0 spurt, while Miller later had a pair of kills in a 6-0 run to give Catawba a 25-16 lead. Pembroke led early in the third game, but Catawba rallied to even the game at 17-17 and scored 14 of the last 18 points. Heather Hawkins (Troutman, NC) had three kills and three blocks in the game, while Crissi Harrison (Hickory, NC) had a pair of kills and three blocks. Setter Nicole Scheidt (China Grove, NC) had 41 assists and 14 digs. Catawba continued its late game runs in the opener against Pfeiffer. Leading 16-15, the Lady Indians would put together a 12-2 run to grab a 28-17 advantage. A kill and an ace by Scheidt closed out the game. Harrison had five kills and an ace in the game. Catawba jumped out to a 20-11 lead in game two and held off the Falcons. Hawkins had six kills and block to lead Catawba. Bonner and Zuck each finished with eight kills, Hawkins added six and freshman Amanda Nantz (Troutman, NC) posted five. Katie Moore (Haymarket, VA) recorded nine digs. Scheidt was named the tournament MVP, while Miller earned all-tournament honors. #######
